UK public demands safer, greener packaging – and they want more glass

Encirc’s latest consumer survey has revealed a change in perception of food and drink packaging, with the public actively searching for alternatives to plastics and cans that are safer, healthier, and more sustainable, such as glass.
In May 2025, Encirc partnered with Censuswide to poll 2,000 UK adults. The results are clear: people are concerned about chemicals in packaging, the environmental impact of plastics, and the effect packaging has on taste. Glass is emerging as the public’s preferred alternative – and they want government and industry to act.
Key findings at a glance.
– 73% support stronger government action to increase the use of glass packaging
– 67% are worried about chemicals in their food and drink packaging
– 70% say a microplastic-free label would influence their buying choices
– 64% are willing to pay more for glass-packaged products
– Respondents were seven times more likely to prefer the taste of drinks when packaged in glass than plastic or cans
“This is a clear wake-up call for the packaging industry. People want safety, sustainability and quality. Being chemically inert and infinitely recyclable, glass delivers all three. The public is asking for change – and we need government and industry to meet that demand together,” said Sean Murphy, Managing Director at Encirc.
He added: “Unlike many materials, glass is chemically inert – it doesn’t leach into food or drink, distort taste, or degrade over time. That means the contents stay pure, safe, and exactly how they’re meant to be enjoyed. It’s also 100% and infinitely recyclable, making it a pillar of the circular economy.
“At Encirc, we believe this data is a signal for change. We’re calling on policymakers, brands, and supply chain partners to prioritise glass where it makes sense – for safety, for sustainability, and because consumers want it.”
