Encirc achieves CORE – the Standard for Responsible Business

Press Release
December 2017

Encirc has been accredited with CORE – the Standard for Responsible Business. CORE is a certification for businesses in Northern Ireland that recognises organisations at the forefront of corporate social responsibility – those who go above and beyond to establish their business as having a completely integrate commitment to people, places and the planet.

What is CORE?

CORE accreditation is highly sought after, and to be successful, Encirc needed to demonstrate competence, skill and innovation in several different elements of the company strategy. These included strategic planning; stakeholder engagement; responsible leadership; people development; energy and transport; equality, diversity and inclusion; resource efficiency, and biodiversity.

Encirc’s commitment to CORE’s key components

Over the years, Encirc has implemented a number of far-reaching initiatives which reflect CORE’s central values. Our comprehensive sustainability strategy, Project21, has been created to forecast the current and future plans for the business, primarily encouraging workers and customers alike to reduce their carbon footprint.

Continuous improvement has also been a central element to Encirc’s growth as a business. Encirc has had notable success in increasing productivity and sustainability across its operations. Encirc remains the only glass manufacturer to offer a 360 degree supply chain solution. This means that we not only make glass containers, but also fill them and deliver them to where they need to go – cutting customers’ costs and end-users’ carbon footprint.

Looking to the future, Encirc recently invested £6 million into a new onsite railhead, which can deliver recycled glass cullet and raw materials directly to the site, saving 2 million road miles every year. In 2018, Encirc will invest in new gas furnaces across its two sites, which will help to improve carbon emissions and remove three large oil tankers from the road per day.

Over the years, Encirc’s initiatives have been recognised in a number of prestigious awards. In 2015, Encirc brought home The Manufacturer’s MX Award for Sustainable Manufacturing and British Glass’s Supply Chain Initiative of the Year Award. More recently, Encirc won British Glass’s CSR Award, and our head of strategic development, Fiacre O’Donnell, managed to pick up The Drinks Business’s Green Personality of the Year in 2016.

A great achievement

Achieving CORE recognition is a fantastic achievement for the business. Fiacre O’Donnell, head of strategic development at Encirc, said: “The CORE accreditation is really exciting news for Encirc. Everyone here works so hard to ensure we are providing a service which is socially responsible and sustainable, as well as efficient and productive.”
